Guzman, Clausen named to IWN All-City team


Congratulations to sophomore pitcher Aryn Guzman and junior shortstop/third baseman Kayla Clausen who were named to the 2011 Irvine World News All-City team in softball. 
  
  
Also, congratulations to sophomore catcher Annie Dowling and senior captain Kyle Nakama who were named as Honorable Mention selections.

Lady Warriors lose heartbreaker against Timberwolves


Woodbridge 6, Northwood 9:  On Tuesday, May 10th, the Woodbridge Warriors Varsity Softball team traveled to the upper reaches of Irvine to face Northwood in a key Pacific Coast League match up.  
  
The Timberwolves struck first in the bottom of the second inning by manufacturing one run.  
  
With a potential CIF berth on the line, the Lady Warriors struck back with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning.  After two quick outs, Ryne Nakama turned the momentum around by stealing second base after reaching safely on a fielder’s choice. Katherine Henshall then moved Ryne to third with a single to left and Kayla Clausenworked a walk to load the bases for clean-up hitter Annie Dowling.  With a two and two count, Annie smashed a double to deep center field and cleared the bases of Warriors.  
  
Aryn Guzman scored the fourth run of the game for the visiting Warriors in the top of the fourth inning after reaching on a fielder’s choice and eventually crossing the plate on an RBI groundout by Ryne Nakama.  
  
With the score 4-1, Kayla Clausen got things going again in the top of the fifth inning with a lead off homerun to center field.  Annie Dowling followed with a single andDanica Bishop worked a walk.  After a quick out, Kyle Nakama loaded the bases by drawing the second walk of the inning from the rattled Northwood pitcher.  Aryn Guzman brought in the sixth run of the game with an RBI single up the middle.  Still with bases loaded, the Timberwolves were able to minimize the damage by getting the next two Warrior batters to strike out.  
  
Trailing 6-1, the Northwood offense finally got things going in the bottom of the fifth inning.  After sending ten batters to the plate, the Timberwolves were able to score six runs and take a 7-6 lead.  
  
Shell-shocked, the Lady Warriors never really threatened again.  Northwood brought two more runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning and completed the season sweep.  Game summary.

Lady Warriors dominate CDM in another shutout victory


Woodbridge 19, Corona del Mar 0:  On Thursday, May 5th, the Woodbridge Warriors Varsity Softball team hooked, cleaned and grilled the Sea Kings from Corona Del Mar in a 19-0 win.  
  
Starting pitcher Danica Bishop recorded five strikeouts on her way to notching the five-inning, shutout victory.  
  
The offensive explosion was lead by Ryne Nakama (3 for 4, two doubles, one triple),Danica Bishop (3 for 4, single, double, homerun), Kayla Clausen (3 for 3, double, two triples), Katherine Henshall (2 for 4, three RBIs), and Aryn Guzman (2 for 4, two RBIs).  Game summary.

Softball Summer Tryout June 20-22


Coach Alan Dugard has announced that there will be a Lady Warriors Softball Summer Tryout on June 20, 21, and 22 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.  
  
  
All current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade girls plus incoming 8th graders are encouraged to tryout.

Lady Warriors impressive in shutout over Trojans


Woodbridge 8, University 0:  On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Woodbridge Warriors Varsity Softball team traveled south to square off against the University Trojans.  After a quiet first inning, the Warriors got their first run on the board in the second with a lead off hit by Reina Chandler, who successfully stole second base and then scored on a RBI single by Danica Bishop.  
  
After starting pitcher Aryn Guzman threw up another zero in the bottom of the second inning, Kayla Clausen led off the third with a double to center field.  Annie Dowling then reached first on an error and Reina Chandler followed with her second hit of the game.  With bases loaded and no outs, Danica Bishop notched her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.  The next batter, Kyle Nakama, drew a walk to load the bases once again, but the Trojans were able to halt the damage with an inning ending double play after designated hitter Ashley Radziuk lined out to second base.  
  
With a 2-0 lead after three complete innings, Ryne Nakama got things going again for the Lady Warriors with a lead off single to right center.  Ryne proceeded to steal second, move to third on a groundout to the right side and scored on Katherine Henshall’s sacrifice ground out, again to the right side.  The small-ball displayed by the Warriors in this inning was textbook.  
  
After the Trojan batters went down in order, Reina Chandler came up and hit her third single of the game and scored on Danica Bishop’s two-run homerun to deep center field.  
  
After a quiet sixth inning, the Warriors brought across three more runs in the top of the seventh inning with Annie Dowling’s lead-off single followed by consecutive doubles byReina Chandler and Danica Bishop, capped off by a RBI groundout by Julia Chung.  
  
Pegged with an 8-0 lead, pitcher Aryn Guzman put the Trojan batters down in order on her way to a complete game shut out, recording six strikeouts along the way.  Game summary.
