Woodbridge 8, University 0: On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Woodbridge Warriors Varsity Softball team traveled south to square off against the University Trojans. After a quiet first inning, the Warriors got their first run on the board in the second with a lead off hit by Reina Chandler, who successfully stole second base and then scored on a RBI single by Danica Bishop.
After starting pitcher Aryn Guzman threw up another zero in the bottom of the second inning, Kayla Clausen led off the third with a double to center field. Annie Dowling then reached first on an error and Reina Chandler followed with her second hit of the game. With bases loaded and no outs, Danica Bishop notched her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. The next batter, Kyle Nakama, drew a walk to load the bases once again, but the Trojans were able to halt the damage with an inning ending double play after designated hitter Ashley Radziuk lined out to second base.
With a 2-0 lead after three complete innings, Ryne Nakama got things going again for the Lady Warriors with a lead off single to right center. Ryne proceeded to steal second, move to third on a groundout to the right side and scored on Katherine Henshall’s sacrifice ground out, again to the right side. The small-ball displayed by the Warriors in this inning was textbook.
After the Trojan batters went down in order, Reina Chandler came up and hit her third single of the game and scored on Danica Bishop’s two-run homerun to deep center field.
After a quiet sixth inning, the Warriors brought across three more runs in the top of the seventh inning with Annie Dowling’s lead-off single followed by consecutive doubles byReina Chandler and Danica Bishop, capped off by a RBI groundout by Julia Chung.
Pegged with an 8-0 lead, pitcher Aryn Guzman put the Trojan batters down in order on her way to a complete game shut out, recording six strikeouts along the way. Game summary.
